My thesis aims at defining and exploring the idea of the “female gaze” on costume and society in Italy and globally. I will first analyze the concept of “male gaze” by deciphering the modes of expression and aesthetic categories imposed by it on the representation of the female body and its styling. I will then describe the characteristics of a possible all-female look, how it may be diversified and what the aesthetic outcomes and social and political implications may be, using examples taken from the video and book “Il corpo delle donne” by Lorella Zanardo, from films, magazines articles, websites, fashion show videos and dance editorials.
